How To Directory
THE MARKETING PROGRAM FOR REGAL REPORTS
You
now possess one of the most powerful sales progrms ever developed for mail order sales -
the REGAL REPORTS and the opportunity to sell these reports under your own name as
publisher. Your package includes the 18 report, #A-1 to #A-10 and #B-1 to #B-8; this
marketing program and the sales circular for you to use to promote sales of your reports.
Your
purchase of the complete package automatically grants you full reprint and sales rights.
You are authorized to have these reports reproduced and sell them as your own; and, in
effect, become the publisher. Your customers, who purchase the complete set, must be
furnished one of each of the reports, a copy of the marketing program and a copy of the
sales circular - 20 pieces in all. As publisher, you must have each piece printed and
must furnish the complete package to those who order it, so these customers will have the
opportunity and all the material available to reprint under their names.
Have
the material reproduced professionally on white paper by an offset printer. You must
furnish your customers clear and sharp copies, which they in turn can reproduce for their
customers. Do not Xerox copies; do not send out mimeographed copies. Fold, or have your
printer fold, the reports in half to make a 4-page publication. You will advertise 4-page
reports; so provide what you advertise. Orders can be shipped conveniently and cheaply in
6" x 9" brown kraft envelopes.
Don't
rubber-stamp or type-in your name and address on the sales circular. If you already have
your name and address in print, cut out this part and paste it on the order form of the
circular. Otherwise, have your name and address type set. It costs very little and the
type-set name and address can be used over and over again on other literature.
Be
sure your material is professional looking, neat, clean, clear - nothing that looks sloppy
or amateurish. Anything less will affect sales results. Beginners who fail are often
guilty of such mistakes; sloppy-looking circulars will not bring in many mail order sales.
Don't make the same error.
PROMOTION
- The best methods to sell Regal Reports are through classified ads, space ads and
direct mailings. Mail the offer to your prospects, inquirers and customers or rent names
from a qualified mail list firm. Use only lists of names that would be responsive to this
offer, such as opportunity seekers, mail order interest, second income seekers and people
who want information and money-making, money-saving opportunity.
We
purposely avoid presenting a sample classified ad. If we did, everyone would be tempted
to use the copy. All ads would then look and sound the same. Readers would answer only
one of the same ads; odds are it wouldn't be yours. Instead, prepare your own copy or
have an advertising agency prepare an effective classified ad. They will do it without
charge.
Some
of the major sales appeals of this offer are: "Over 2000% Profit", "Fantastic Profits",
"4000% Profit Possible", "Become Publisher With All Material Supplied," "Simple
Home-Operated Business", "Huge Profits Selling New Information By Mail", use words like
"Rich", "Wealth", "New", "Terrific", "Mail Order", "Big Money", etc. Build your ads
around some of these selling points and best features of this offer.
RECOMMENDED
PUBLICATIONS: Salesman's Opportunity, Specialty Salesman, Spare Time, Money Making
Opportunities, Income Opportunities, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Mechanics
Illustrated, National Enquirer, Moneysworth, Globe, among many others that feature
"Business Opportunities" or "Money-Making Opportunities" classified sections. Your
advertising agency can suggest appropriate publications for this offer.
You
can also promote this offer in various mail order and opportunity publications that are
distributed to smaller mail order operators and persons seeking money making offers.
These publications are ideal for classified ads and 1 inch or 2 inch space ads. You can
obtain a guide listing hundreds of such publications, publishers' names and addresses,
circulation, rates, etc. Request #905, "Mail Order Dealer's Advertising Rate Manual",
price $6.00, which may be order from Globe Reports, Inc., P.O. Box 20588-RR, St. Louis, Mo
63139.
Should
anyone question the profit statement, you can justify the promise of earning 1000% to
4000% profit mark-up. If you pay $20.00 per M for the reports (2 cents per copy), 5
reports will cost your 10 cents. The $5.00 sales price will leave you a profit of $4.90 -
a 4900% profit mark-up. The complete set of 20 items will cost you 40 cents; the $12.00
sale will gross $11.60 profit - a mark up of 2900%. At $24.00 per M cost for printing
will still bring profit mark-ups of 4066% and 2400% respectively. If local printing costs
are high, check for names of mail order printers in ads in various national and mail order
magazines.
Initially,
get a supply of the sales circulars printed. This is the piece you will use to promote
this offer by mailing it to inquirers, customers and name lists. Your own sales circular
can be printed on colored paper. A letter may accompany the circular to make the offer
more effective. Always include a return envelope for your customer's convenience to mail
in the order. This consideration will create more orders.
Next,
you must decide how you will fill orders. There are three options open for you:
- Become
the publisher and prime source of supply for the offer. You must have all 18 reports
neatly printed on white stock, plus the sales circular (blank space for customer's name
& address), plus the marketing program sheet (see below). A customer who orders the
$12.00 set must be furnished the entire package so he can also fully promote and supply
this offer.
- If
you prefer to test the sales potential of the offer before getting reports printed for your own use, you can get orders drop-shipped by the supplier listed below.
- Or,
you can obtain small quantities from the supplier to fill your orders direct.

NOTE:
You must provide your customers with a source of supply for their drop-ship or quantity
purchases. Your supplier's name appears above. If you get the reports printed, list your
name as supplier. If you buy quantity lots and later plan to drop-ship or supply
quantities, cover the above name with a gummed label bearing your name and address. It is
perfectly acceptable to type or rubber stamp your name on this form. Your customer
realizes this program is dependent upon a series of suppliers. You are no longer
concerned about making an initial sale - just to supply reports for the next
dealer.
Follow
the recommended procedures in this program - promote wisely and widely - and you should
enjoy a very, very profitable and successful business with Regal Reports.
Here
at Last! A simple Method For You To Make Big Money At Home - Lots of It!
Perhaps
you are interested in starting a mail order business but you are not sure what to sell, or
how to go about selling it. Or, perhaps you tried to sell something by mail but did not
succeed very profitably. NOW. . .you get a genuine opportunity to Strike It
Rich.
Spectacular
profits are being made in mail order by people who sell a certain "Most Wanted" product -
specialized printed information - in the form of books, manuals or reports on a variety of
interesting subjects.
While
many mail order people are selling printed information, only a small percentage are
earning really big money. There are two main reasons why the others are not achieving
greater success:
- The
subject matter is not very interesting or appealing to the general
buying public.
- The
profit margin of the item is too small for the mail order operator to
realize worth-while earnings from his promotion.
Only
a publisher, known as the "Prime Source", can realistically expect to earn a fortune in
mail order by selling printed information. Why? He is the producer (gets his material
printed), pays the rock-bottom price for his product, eliminates the middleman, charges
high (yet fair) prices and earns the top profits from sales - a profit he does not have to
share with anyone else.
WOULD
A 2000% TO 4000% PROFIT MARK-UP INTEREST YOU? It's not only possible - but such an
opportunity is actually available and ready for you right now!
You
can earn such fantastic profits as publisher and prime source for Regal Reports. We offer
you a very simple mail order program that is undoubtedly the most "sure-fire" money maker
that you will discover in your entire lifetime!
REGAL

one-page copy of some vague, impractical, far-fetched or even illegal activity. Instead,
our reports are full four-page reports jam-packed with valuable, much sought after
information that provides great appear, big value and tremendous benefits to everyone you
offer these reports.
REGAL
REPORTS consist of 18 highly informative, quality reports with hundreds of super $$ making
ideas, money saving tips, freebies and valuable references - just the kind of information
everyone wants, needs and is anxious to obtain. surprisingly, you can sell these reports
for only $1.00 each - they will cost you mere pennies to reproduce - YET, can bring you
fast, unbelievably huge profits!
Look
over the titles. Here are important "How To" and "Where To" opportunities that people
would be willing to pay much more for if available elsewhere. You will offer a real
bargain - earn big profits in the process - plus give your customers a chance to earn big
money for themselves as publisher and prime source for these reports - just as you will be
doing.
3 WAY MONEY-MAKER
We
offer you three effective methods to start, promote and profit from this fabulously
profitable program:
- Your
small investment in the complete set of Regal Reports will include full "reprint rights"
authorizing you to reproduce and sell the camera ready copies we furnish. You will also
receive a marketing plan outlining effective methods to sell these reports. Plus -
included will be a copy of the sales producing circular for reproduction with your name
and address as prime source.
- If
you prefer to test the sales and profit potential of this offer before getting a supply
of reports printed, you can start by getting your orders dropp-shipped.
- Or,
to earn exceptionally high profits from the beginning, you can obtain a small quantity
of reports from a supplier. Later, you can decide if you want to have the reports printed
to handle volume sales.
This
program is very different - because you have a source of supply for reports if you do not
want to get them printed right away. So - start big - or go at a slow and cautious pace
at the beginning. Either way, let the results of a Regal Reports promotion prove that you
are on the way to greater sales, profits and success you never dreamed
possible!

aspirants or special interest groups. Instead, you will offer informative material with
appeal to every person or household - a potential of over 100,000,000 customers. This is
a giant market - a large share of it can be yours!

#A-1 - THE REPEATING $500 WEEK-END PROFIT OPPORTUNITY
Here's
an opportunity to own your own "general store" without any large investment or expensive
overhead.
This
is possible by participating in flea market sales - or swap meets as they are called in
some parts of the country. It affords you an excellent chance to earn extra money - it is
not unusual for a dealer to make $200 to $500, or more, profit just on
weekends.
This
report will fully explain and provide valuable tips on how you can profitably participate
in this activity.
First,
find out where flea markets are operated in your area. Many parking lots, drive-in
theaters, halls and other buildings are set up as flea markets. Most are open only on
weekends; others operate daily. Some are run by professional operators; while churches,
clubs, fraternal and veterans organizations, and fund raising groups hold these sales at
periodic intervals.
Such
sales are usually publicized or advertised in the local papers (usually, classified
section) or on bulletin boards. Or, look in the yellow pages of the telephone directory
under "Flea Markets" or "Swap Meets" to find out who organizes these sales and where they
are held.
Your
next step is to visit flea markets. Observe how they operate, what type of items are
being sold, how the merchandise is being displayed and what type of goods are being
offered at each market.
Now
you are ready to start. Contact the operator or manager and reserve space - for a day,
weekend, week or month - whatever period is their minimum policy and for what length of
time you wish to participate. Obtain merchandise which will appeal to the class of people
who normally attend the market you selected.
Reservation
costs vary. Many factors determine this - the size of the market, the amount of traffic
it attracts, the length of time you reserve, or the size of space you require for your
display. Rates may also vary in different sections of the country. A well-attended,
well-organized flea market is certainly worth your attention, rather than a shabby,
disorganized one.
In
any case, the space cost should be quite modest in relation to the sales and profit
potential. some flea market operators may even assign space on a commission basis. You
pay them a certain percentage of sales.
SELECTING
YOUR SPACE: If you have a choice of space, reserve it where there is a lot of traffic.
Entrances are not the best locations. People like to browse before they buy and there is
a chance they may not return to the area where they come in. Space near exits is not
recommended either. By the time they reach that section they may have already spent their
limit. Or, they are just tired and ready to go home.
The
best areas are near snack bars, rest rooms, drinking fountains or where people constantly
go back and forth. If you are assigned a good spot at a constantly operating market, try
to reserve that same space each time. Your customers will know where to find out next
time, or tell others where you are located.
If
locations are assigned on a first-come basis, get there very early to set up at a
desirable location. But, even if you have space reserved, allow yourself an hour or so
before opening time to set up your display.
WHAT
YOU WILL NEED: Your merchandise, of course. Then, if your table is provided, bring a
folding table or two for necessary space to effectively display your wares. Also bring a
comfortable folding chair, money to make change and a box to store your money (a cigar box
serves nicely). If the market is held outdoors on a hot day, you may need the protection
of an umbrella. Also have a plastic sheet handy to protect your merchandise if it
showers.
Bring
your lunch and liquid refreshments, unless there is a snack bar on the premises and you
would prefer to eat and drink there. If possible, bring along a member of the family or a
friend to help you. You may need to be away from your table for meals, use the rest room,
or walk around to look at other dealers' displays. If it is not possible to bring someone,
don't worry about it. Your neighboring dealers will be happy to watch your merchandise
during your absence.
Rain
is sometimes a threat and a major concern, particularly for an outdoor flea market. Rain
may even keep people from attending an indoor sale. You should expect a rain check,
refund, or allowance from the operator if sales are affected or interrupted by this
situation. As another reminder, be sure to have a plastic cover to protect your
merchandise in the event of rain.
YOUR
DISPLAY: Arrange your display as neatly and as attractively as possible. Place similar
items together. Don't crowd things into a messy pile - customers don't like to paw
through a jumble of merchandise to find out what you offer. Set taller items toward the
back of the table or use boxes or blocks so that everything you offer can be seen at first
glance. Place jewelry on a velvet background or in jewelry boxes. Use your imagination
to make your display attention- getting. Do something special to draw more people to your
table.
For
instance, if you are a craftsman do some of the work at your table. People are interested
in and attracted to activity. Or, bring a radio and turn it on from time to time. Don't
let the sound blare or play something disagreeable or offensive. Be different from the
other dealers. For example, you could record and play a cassette extoling the merits of
what you are selling or doing. But, don't sound like a circus barker. A little
imagination for "on the spot" attention will help bring more people to your
table.
SELLING
PRICES: Besides what you offer, the price at which you sell your merchandise is very
important. You need to make a healthy profit for your time and investment, yet you must
offer customers a good buy for their money.
You
can price each item individually, or price a group collectively. Your sign can read, for
example, "Everything in this section, $3.00", another "Everything in this section, $6.00,"
etc. Some dealers do not price anything but allow bargaining, keeping in mind the lowest
price they will accept. When a prospect asks the price of a certain item, the dealer will
state a price. If the prospect hesitates, the dealer will offer a lower price until the
prospect buys or the minimum price is reached. The psychology of this type of selling is
that the customer feels he got the better of the dealer and walks away happy with his
purchase. Price haggling is not usually a good practice and may offend certain people.
Besides, it could be time consuming. You can always put up new price signs.
WHAT
PRODUCTS TO SELL: Specialty items, not usually found in retail shops are best for flea
market sales. Brand names are too common; prices are well known or can easily be checked.
A customer may have examined a Bulova watch at the jewelry store, price $80.00. You may
get him as a buyer with a look alike brand priced at only $50.00. Items such as jewelry,
watches, toys, novelties, housewares, auto accessories, paintings, toys, gift and novelty
items are among the many hundreds of potential profitable sellers. Feature items that
turn over fast. If an item doesn't sell well, keep lowering the price until someone buys
it. Continue reordering good selling items. Replace slow sellers with more appealing
items until you feature a steady fast selling, profitable line.
WHERE
TO OBTAIN PRODUCTS: There are thousands of sources from which you can buy at low
wholesale prices. Look through magazines such as Salesman's Opportunity, Specialty
Salesman, Spare Time, Money Making Opportunities, Income Opportunities, Popular Mechanics,
Popular Science, Mechanics Illustrated, etc. Look for closeouts and wholesale offers.
You will find sources for many products you or your customers have never seen before.
Also refer to the many sources listed in other reports of this series.
Your
logical choice, of course, is to contact the local wholesalers - those handling general
merchandise or specialty items. They are handy and merchandise can be picked up
immediately. also, you might be able to work out a consignment deal. This arrangement
would enable them to sell additional merchandise. You, on the other hand, could obtain
what you need for flea market sales without any investment. Above all, do not buy large
stock until you are sure it will sell profitably.
#A-2 POSITIVE METHODS TO BEAT INFLATION
The
best method to beat inflation is to SAVE. You can save by not spending as much - or save
by getting more for each dollar you spend - or not spend any money unless it is absolutely
necessary. Keep this report as a check list - refer to it often as a reminder and tips
for eliminating or controlling spending - thereby saving yourself many hundreds of dollars
each year.
Set
up a reasonable budget; stick to it.
Don't buy on credit unless absolutely necessary. (finance charges will be higher than
interest you can earn in your saving account.)
Pay charge accounts on time to save extra finance fees.
Pay insurance on a yearly basis, rather than quarterly.
Buy generic drugs whenever possible. Ask your doctor to prescribe them.
Buy prescriptions at discount drug stores; prices will generally be lower than
neighborhood drug stores.
Buy vitamins from a mail order firm.
Live where you can afford, you can move to a better location when financial situation
permits
When buying an older house: check for termite infestation and woodrot, sagging structure
and foundation, electric wiring, heating unit, plumbing, hot water heater, roof, leaky
basements.
Keep up proper maintenance on cars and major appliances to avoid major repair expense in
the future.
Do minor repairs yourself.
Eliminate the use of unnecessary electric appliances.
Check appliances before you rush to get them fixed. May be only loose connection,
accumulation of dirt, or something minor you can fix yourself. Check manual, warranty and
guarantee. Call a service agency who might tell you what is wrong and how to correct it.
Check consumer reports at book stores or library for best buys and quality before
purchasing major item.
Shop around before buying a major or costly item - you will get a "best buy" if you check
various locations.
Besides house and car, the cost of food is a major expense in a family's budget. Here are
tips that will enable you to realize substantial savings on food.
If
your family is large, consider a freezer to buy food in quantity lots or when prices are
most reasonable.
But food in season and freeze for later consumption.
Do comparison shopping at various supermarkets to determine which stores have the best
prices on items you frequently purchase.
Avoid buying convenience foods; prepare similar meals at home.
Use cents off coupons for any food item you need to buy.
Buy house brands at lower prices.
Avoid junk and non-nutritious foods; nutrient foods are healthier for you and cost less.
Get a recipe book for leftover foods; many delicious dishes can be prepared from
leftovers.
Drink less coffee; switch to tea or lower cost drinks earlier in the day.
Watch the checker for possible errors; check the cash register receipt when you get home.
Buy dented, torn label, or surplus sale items.
Buy perishable foods past the stamped date; store will not sell spoiled food. The item
will be full nutritional and tasty if used early or frozen immediately.
Read labels and check weight for best buy.
Make
and repair your own clothes.
Save aluminum and sell to recycling plants.
Cut down on smoking, drinking and entertaining.
Save on dental bills; use the facilities of a dental school if there is one in your area.
For minor medical problems use the services of a local medical school clinic.
For home repairs use only reputable firms. Get references from friends or neighbors or
firms they use. Check with the Association or Better Business Bureau. Get competitive
bids.
Buy washable clothing; save the cost of dry cleaning.
Save on carpeting by buying remnants or leftovers if proper size is available.
If you are a senior citizen take advantage of benefits such as free checking, safety
deposit box, discounts at stores, restaurants, sporting events & theatre.
Avoid financing major purchases through the dealer. (Chances are interest rates will be
higher)
Save on film processing by sending negatives to a mail order processing firm.
Buy floor samples (usually new guarantee applies.)
Consider buying used items from classified ads or a resell-it shop (refinish if necessary)
Ask for an extra or "bonus" when buying larger priced items, such as free lamps with sofa
and chair purchase. (Stores will do this to close a deal.)
An inexpensive method for skin care is to wash the face with warm water; while moist apply petroleum jelly.
Don't get tempted by the glamour ads for personal care items (lower priced items will work as well in spite of clever ad copy that implies otherwise.)
Take your lunch to work.
Organize or use a car pool for transportation to work.
Don't rush out to buy a major item; wait for a sale (You don't have to wait too long, these days.)
Get gasoline at a self-service pump.
Add your own oil to the car.
Replace air filter and oil filter yourself.
Leave car at home and walk whenever possible. (It's a lot healthier, too.)
Read ads; take advantage of advertised specials for any item you need. Buy wholesale or in quantity if price break offered and product will be used up within a few months.
Save on auto insurance by checking rates with several agents; you can save on discounts for good driver, "B" average student, two or more cars, lower rates for similar or better protective coverage.
Check insurance rates and coverage on persons and property; you may get the same coverage, or better, at a lower price.
Younger persons should consider term insurance.
Get highest interest for your savings; get interest on your checking account.
Make
long distance calls during the bargain rate hours.
Call an "800" or toll-free lines whenever possible.
Buy in "off season"; Xmas cards and decorations can often be bought at half-price right
after Xmas; winter clothing costs less in July, etc.
Save money on new books; get them free at the library or wait until a paperback issue
comes out.
Be your own auto mechanic; take courses or study manuals
ENERGY SAVINGS:
Turn
off lights in unoccupied rooms.
Use lower wattage bulbs wherever possible.
Consider insulation, energy saving doors and windows. (Tax deduction is allowed for many
energy saving installations and repairs.)
Shut off rooms not in use during cold weather.
Keep thermostat down; wear a sweater, jacket or heavy shirt for comfort.
Consider and electric blanket for comfortable sleeping with thermostat turned down
overnight.
When absent for considerable periods turn down hot water heater; turn off unnecessary
pilot lights.
Save in summer; use dehumidifier to remove excess water from the air.
Consider a ceiling or attic fan for comfort in living areas and save on air conditioning
costs.
VACATIONS:
Use
budget priced hotels when traveling.
Seek out free tourist attractions.
Share vacation expenses with another couple or family.
Consider an off season vacation when rates in resort area are lower.
Travel
the least possible distances for a pleasure or shopping trip. Plan your route so that you
travel less and save gas.
Before you borrow money, shop around. Get the best financing rate and borrow for the
shortest period of time your budget allows.
Skip the high priced first run movies. You'll see the same film at second run houses at
lower prices.
Go to the barber shop or beauty salon less. Someone at home can trim excessive hair or
set hair.
Prepare your own tax report.
Avoid "impulse" buying - purchase only what you need.
All
these tips will help you save money and enable you to stay ahead of inflation. You do not
have to lower your basic standard of living, make painful sacrifices or endure hardship.
But remember, if you save just $1.00 per day, you will have $365.00 more at the end of the
year to do with what you want. Save $5.00 a day and you will be $1,825 more financially
ahead next year. Worth it? You decide for yourself.
#A-3 MAKING BIG PROFITS USING ONLY CATALOGS & SAMPLES
It
is possible to earn big money with NO INVESTMENT in merchandise or inventory- simply by
showing potential customers samples or descriptive catalogs. You can sell by this method
to individuals, organizations and groups, or businesses. The following firms, listed
under their main line of products, will furnish material to start you in this simple type
of business. Your earnings will be derived from commissions or profit mark-ups. In many
cases suppliers will ship directly to your customers. A few firms require a nominal
refundable deposit for samples, catalogs or sales kits and current requests are indicated
in the listings.

#A-4 136 BASIC STEPS TO MAIL ORDER SUCCESS
This
"mini" course outlines the essential elements for establishing and operating a successful
mail order business. Here is a practical guide for beginners and check list for those
already in mail order.
THE COMPANY NAME
- Select
a short, friendly, informal, easy to remember company name
- Your
personal name is acceptable, but add "Co.", "Gifts", etc.
- Home
address or post office box makes no appreciable difference
STARTING SUPPLIES
- Neatly
printed letterheads and envelopes
- A
typewriter - or the availability of one is a must
- Parcel
post shipping labels
- Avoid
purchasing expensive office equipment or supplies until absolutely needed for more
efficient operation - and capital permits.
STARTING CAPITAL REQUIRED
- To
purchase above starting supplies
- To
pay for two or three publication ads to test your offer
- To
pay rental for a minimum of 1,000 names for a direct mail program, plus postage
costs
- To
pay for preparation and layout of a display ad
- To
pay for art work and type-setting of circular
- To
pay for additional or continuing promotions if initial results are
encouraging
- Costs
to cover promotion expenses if further testing is required.
- Extra
capital to allow for unforeseen and unexpected expenses.
THE PRODUCT (Select an item that, preferably):
- is
new, unusual and, if possible, exclusively yours
- Is
of good quality and fairly priced
- Fills
a definite need for a wide and ready market
- Offers
strong appeal to the prospect.
- Is
not commonly sold in retail stores
- Cannot
be bought elsewhere or only from limited sources
- You
can control its production or distribution'
- Is
not expensive to make or produce; can be bought at a low price.
- Interest
a large percentage of the market
- Is
not seasonable (except Xmas); can be sold the year around
- Lightweight;
not fragile; safe and inexpensive to ship
- Will
be used up or consumed and must be reordered periodically
LOCATING A SUITABLE MAIL ORDER ITEM
- Look
through mail order sections of magazines to check what types of products successful
mail order dealers offer
- Inquire
of local manufacturers and Chamber of Commerce
- Attend
trade shows (with gift, jewelry, household themes, etc.)
- Contact
appropriate manufacturers listed in Thomas Register, available at public
libraries
- Watch
for new product listings in trade journals and magazines.
- Check
out close-outs, surplus and overstock offers.
- Contact
mail order supply sources
- Design,
develop, manufacture or publish your own product.
THE LINE
- Develop
or acquire other items to tie in with your main product.
- Present
follow up offers to customers and prospects
- Promote
succession or products appealing to the same trade
- Sell
such services as personalization, consultation, etc., if such services are adaptable
to your line.
THE ADVERTISING COPY
- Use
attention getting, bold headline copy in ads
- Illustrate
the product if space permits; explain how it is used.
- Write
copy in brief, bouncy, down-to-earth style
- Avoid
any overly clever, tricky phrases or expressions
- Be
sincere; don't exaggerate
- Describe
the product clearly and fully
- Stress
the "YOU" approach; tell how the offer will benefit him
- Avoid
overtalking about yourself or your company
- Strive
for conviction and sincerity - be believable
- Instill
confidence; make the prospect feel you are honest.
- Stir
him into action to order your product
- Give
specific directions for ordering
- Provide
a guarantee of satisfaction or money back
- Tailor
the ad/literature to fit the prospect you want to reach
TESTING YOUR OFFER
- If
capital permits, test more than one magazine
- Test
more than one ad, each in a different publication
- Try
split runs if the magazine offers regional or sectional issues
- Continue
a successful ad without change until its pull drops to break-even point
- Don't
rush to change an ad that is pulling well; experiment slowly
- Test
only one change at a time: size of ad - copy - different appeal - new headline -
another illustration - new price
- Use
short testimonials if space permits
- Offer
a bonus - something free or at reduced price
- Key
each ad or mailing to determine where results were derived.
- Keep
accurate records of returns from each promotion
SALES LITERATURE
- Usually
consists of sales letter, descriptive circular or folder, order form, return envelope
(some offers may be effectively sold by only a sales letter)
- Effective
sales letter must create AIDA - ATTENTION, INTEREST, DESIRE, ACTION
- The
circular should fully illustrate or describe the product. It must provide more
detailed information about the product - its uses, benefits, advantages and other
special appeals
- Return
envelope is an essential part of sales literature to make it convenient for the
customer to mail the order
- Mailing
sales offers by first class mail vs third class mail usually shows no appreciable
difference in results
- Mailing
envelope can feature an attractive design or teaser message to induce the
recipient to open and read the offer
THE PRODUCT SUPPLIER
- Develop
or produce your own mail order item, if possible
- Try
to arrange exclusive mail order rights with the supplier
- Establish
supply sources close to home to save delivery time and shipping costs
- Seek
lowest price if item is offered by two or more suppliers
- Order
larger quantities, if you can afford such purchases, to get lower prices or
greater discounts
- Assure
that supplier is reliable and will provide the merchandise you plan to promote; that he
will ship orders promptly
- Consider
only products which allow an adequate profit margin (at least a 3 to 1 profit mark up
on lower priced items)
- Consider
a supplier who is willing to "drop-ship" your orders directly to your customers - seek
at least a 50% discount.
THE SELLING PRICE
- Price
merchandise fairly; give customers their money's worth
- Include
postage or shipping costs in selling price
- Use
round numbers ($3.00, $5.00, etc.) for lower priced items to make it convenient for
customers to remit payment
- Allow
for all costs in marking up prices - postage, overhead, packing, allowances for
non-deliveries, refunds, bad checks
- Be
certain to allow yourself an adequate mark-up to assure profit
- Test
different prices to determine which selling price brings in the greatest amount of
profit
ADVERTISING
- Don't
attempt to start unless you can afford at least two or three ads; or pay for a direct
mailing to at least 1,000 names.
- Plan
to advertise consistently
- Use
ad space relative to sale price, i.e., use small size ads for low priced items and
larger ads for more expensive items
- Items
priced over $3.00 usually do not sell as profitable through classified ads
- In
space ads, offer products in the $3.00 to $10.00 price range.
- It
is usually better to advertise for inquiries if an item sells for $10.00 or
more.
- Two
small ads will generally produce more business than one ad twice as large.
- Keep
repeating ads as long as they continue profitable
- Don't
waste unnecessary space; advertising is expensive.
- Don't
expect to make a killing from one ad or mailing. Consistent advertising is the key to
mail order success.
THE MEDIA
- Newspapers
with mail order sections bring quick returns and are acceptable for initial tests.
Results are not usually as good as from magazine ads for long range pull.
- Use
only publications with the type of readership who will react favorably to your type
of product or offer.
- Unsold
inquirers should be followed up with special inducements or with new offers.
- Rent
names only from reliable brokers or mail order sources.
- Use
only lists of people who are logical prospects for your offer.
- Compile
a mailing list from your own inquirers and customers.
- 100.
- Offer your names to list brokers; this is a good source for extra
income.
- 101.
- Advertise in publications which feature large mail order
sections; place ads in the same issues or sections that your competitors
advertise.
THE
ADVERTISING AGENCY
- 102.
- Select an advertising agency experienced in mail
order
- 103.
- Check their credentials; current accounts; successful
promotions
- 104.
- Don't use agencies which represent direct
competitors
- 105.
- Expect to pay in advance for ad placements and other
services until credit terms are established
- 106.
- Advertising agencies are not infallible. Forgive an honest
mistake. Give the agency at least a second chance.
- 107.
- Expect to
pay for preparation of display ads, copy layout, and other services you authorize.
Classified ad copy will be prepared without any cost to you
- 108.
- Extend
full cooperation; go along with their recommendations
- 109.
- If your advertising budget is substantial, consider setting up
your own advertising agency - thereby saving 15% commission, plus a 2% discount in many
instances.
SHIPMENTS
- 110.
- Fill and ship orders promptly. Mail order buyers get edgy with
delays
- 111.
- Use plain but sturdy packing to ship
orders.
- 112.
- Ship via parcel post or U.P.S., which ever is
cheaper
- 113.
- Use neatly printed shipping labels
- 114.
- Address labels with typewriter; not by hand unless indelible ink
is used and address printed.
- 115.
- Specify "Return Guaranteed" on labels or package
TERMS
OF PAYMENT
- 116.
- Accept personal checks; very few bounce
- 117.
- Avoid C.O.D's unless you receive sufficient down package to assure
you have collected enough to cover the costs of the return, plus costs of handling and
repacking the merchandise.
- 118.
- Don't
offer to sell on credit or time payments unless item is high-priced and you can afford to
carry credit accounts.
- 119.
- Consider
the customer your greatest asset. Acknowledge that he is always right; even when he
isn't
- 120.
- Handle complaints promptly; write courteous
explanation
- 121.
- Offer replacement if product is broken or
damaged
- 122.
- Issue immediate refunds; adjust overpayments
promptly
- 123.
- Promote new or other products to your customer list. No
other class of prospect will be as responsive.
- 124.
- Work your
customer list until it no longer proves profitable
YOU
- 125.
- You, mainly, control the destiny of your mail order
business
- 126.
- Be energetic; devote as much time as you can spare to
advance your enterprise to a more profitable future.
- 127.
- Be
determined to make your mail order business a huge success.
- 128.
- Learn as
much as you can about mail order techniques
- 129.
- Be
original; exclusive
- 130.
- Don't copy anyone; copy only successful methods and techniques;
always strive to improve on them
- 131.
- Keep
searching diligently for new, "exclusive" products
- 132.
- Don't
become disappointed by a slow start, or discouraged by a failure or two along the
way.
- 133.
- Always perform professionally; an amateur does not get paid for
his services.
- 134.
- Build
your own financial pyramid; reinvest profits into productive programs that may mushroom
your profits steadily
- 135.
- Avoid
being an easy mark for "get-rich-quick" schemes; start and operate your business on sound
principles.
- 136.
- Refer to this handy check list periodically - remind yourself to
follow only accepted guide lines that control the safe operation of a mail order
business

#A-5 CLEVER, LEGAL METHODS TO REDUCE & ELIMINATE DEBTS
Consider
the predicament of a typical Mr. Smith - and the hundreds of thousands of others like him.
He is making payments on his home, car, furniture and other credit purchases. Credit,
which by the way, was so, so easy to get. He may be up to his neck in bills but up to now
is able to keep his head above the deep waters of debt.
But
what happened? Unexpectedly he was faced with additional expenses - rood repair, a major
appliance had to be replaced, medical bills came up. Perhaps his income suffered due to a
strike, layoff or sickness. Bill payments became more difficult to meet; eventually he
began to slip further and further behind. Phone calls and threatening letters harassed
him daily. Then creditors notified him they would garnishee his salary.
An
unusual situation? No, not at all. It is happening to many thousands every day.
Hopefully, you will never be faced with this serious problem. But, if you are, you can
stop harassment and threats of creditors cold - and legally protect yourself and your
credit standing.
A
salary garnishee is probably the most certain way to ruin one's credit standing. Worst of
all, it might cause the person to lose his job. Very few employers will tarnish
garnishees. They do not want to bother with the extra bookkeeping and details it
involves. It is a situation you definitely want to avoid. There is a way out - a legal
solution to this problem.
Few
people realize that our government recognizes serious personal debt problems and provides
a method to solve this problem. It does not involve any "hidden-law" tricks, dishonesty
or bankruptcy proceedings. Quite to the contrary, this plan enables debtors to ease this
problem, yet be fair and honest with all creditors.
The
law covering this situation is Chapter XIII of the Bankruptcy Act and is called the "Wage
Earner's Plan."
This
plan, as the title indicates, applies only to persons who earn salary or commission,
regardless of how much or how little they earn. This law will put a stop to your
creditors immediately.
Your
first step is to go to the nearest United States District Court and ask to see the
official or referee in charge of such proceedings. In your petition you will fill out
Form 58, "Original Petition in Proceedings under Chapter 13."
This
petition notifies the Court that you are unable to meet current payments. You will
request an extension or time of readjustment to enable you to handle your debts without
undue hardship from future earnings.
This
petition requires two statements. The first, titled "Schedule A" must list every debt you
have incurred - the amount you owe and to whom - and their addresses. The second,
"schedule B", must list all of your assets. A $20.00 fee is required to file this
petition.
When
your petition is filed you get immediate relief. The Court will issue a restraining order
to all your creditors, usually within 24 hours. This order prevents ALL CREDITORS from
taking any action against you.
This
restraining order will:
- Prohibit
creditors or collection agents from harassing or threatening you.
- Immediately
cease all interest and late payments.
- Terminate
any and all legal action which might have been brought against you.
Another
benefit of this plan is that you are granted a three month "grace" period between the date
of filing and your court date in which no payments at all are required of you. Other
advantage is that your credit standing remains unblemished.
In
effect, this plan is a debt consolidation under the court protection. The court protects
you from wage garnishment and other seizures.
The
amount of money you pay to the court is determined by your wages and the amount of money
left over after normal expenses needed for food, utilities, transportation, medical,
clothing, entertainment and other necessary living expenses. The court is usually quite
generous in such matters and will allow you to retain enough money to provide for your
usual standard of living
The
court will normally spread payments over a 36 month period. In any case, they will set up
a payment schedule which will not cause any undue financial hardship to a person who
cannot handle his current debts. You will also have a choice in the time your payments
will be made - whether weekly, bi-monthly or monthly.
The
only situation to effect this plan is that the majority of your creditors must approve the
plan. This is a situation, however, that creditors will almost always approve. They
prefer this arrangement rather than the possibility of getting very little through
bankruptcy.
Every
creditor must file his claim against you within six months. If a creditor fails to file
claim for payments under the Wage Earner's Plan, he is barred from filing ever again and
the debtor will be fully discharged from his obligation.
You
are now aware of the procedure and benefits of filing under the Wage Earner's Plan if
circumstances make it necessary. It provides legal protection and certainly a peace of
mind attitude should unfavorable credit situations ever occur.

should be the last resort to get out of debt, and only if the terms of the Earner's Plan
make it impossible to discharge your debts as demanded.
In
Bankruptcy, creditors are allowed to share in the debtor's assets. After filing for
bankruptcy, all your possessions, your assets, your debts, are in effect the property of
the court.
Most
of your property is exempt in bankruptcy proceedings in virtually all states, such as
clothing, furniture and articles you need to maintain a standard of living. The court is
usually quite considerate in exempting possessions you need to live in your accustomed
manner.
Some
debts are not dischargeable under bankruptcy such as taxes, alimony, child support,
intentional injury claims, damages to property and debts obtained through
fraud.
Bankruptcy
filing is quite simple. Obtain forms from a stationery store. List all your assets and
debts. Take the completed papers to the official in your local bankruptcy court to file.
A nominal fee is charged to file and fees vary from state to state.
In
about 60 days you will be called to a hearing. You do not need a lawyer; explain that you
cannot afford legal counsel. If your affairs are very complicated or involve a great deal
of money, you may prefer to have a lawyer represent you. After this short hearing,
bankruptcy will be legally affirmed.
After
filing bankruptcy, life can go on as before - just as you don't owe a penny to anyone.
You can still get credit. However, another bankruptcy cannot be filed for six years.
Again, as a reminder, few people lose all their possessions as a result of bankruptcy
proceedings.
After
you have been granted bankruptcy, do not let a former creditor trick you into reaffirming
the debt. You are cleared of his intervention. But, make sure you have been completely
honest in listing your debts. Any debts obtained through fraud or deceit are not
dischargeable under the bankruptcy law.
These
are the two main options for people who are hopelessly in debt and would experience
extreme hardship to fulfill these obligations. The Wage Earner's Plan, of course, is
recommended in preference to the possible loss of possessions through
bankruptcy.
The
best advice, of course, is to advise you to limit your credit purchases so that you never
encounter this problem. While the laws protect you generously, it does require some time,
trouble and expense to file under the Wage Earner's Plan or the bankruptcy act.
#A-6 THE MODERN, SIMPLE $100 PER DAY PLAN
This
plan is an old-time proven dollar puller which is just as effective today as when it was
first conceived many years ago.
Not
only is this plan profitable in itself but is an ideal method to obtain names for
promotion of other offers.
Here's
how this simple plan works:
Run
ads similar to this suggested copy:
How Would You Like To Receive 100 Letters A
Day Each Containing $1.00 Copy of Plan And
15 Formulas Only $1.00. Rush A Dollar To
(your name and address)
The
money saving formulas are:
EYEGLASS
CLEANER - Mix together 8 oz ammonia and 32 ozs. denatured alcohol. If you wish to sell
the product it can be put in 1/2 oz bottles and retailed for $1.00.
MOSQUITO
REPELLENT - Mix oil of citronella in common Vaseline and apply to hands or on collar of
shirt or on a cloth or handkerchief which may be tied around the neck.
LIQUID
SOAP - Shave 2 cakes of laundry soap into 2 gallons of boiling water, add one box sal
soda (2 1/2 lbs.) Reduce heat but do not remove from fire until sal soda is dissolved.
When cool, ad one cup of household ammonia. When this solution has cooled you will have
about 2 1/2 gallons of good liquid soap.
LIQUID
HAND SOAP - Dissolve any good powered soap in boiling water. Ad one part alcohol to
each 4 parts of soap solution. Perfume base or scent may be added if desired when the
solution is cooled.
POWERED
HAND SOAP - Put ordinary trisodium phosphate in sifter or mix 7 ozs. of trisodium
phosphate is sifter with 3 ozs. of fine powered pumice.
INSECT
AND ROACH EXTERMINATOR - Mix the following: 1 oz. cocoa powder, 1 lb. Borax, 6 ozs.
powered sugar, 2 ozs sodium fluoride. Mix well and sprinkle around the areas where
insects frequent.
ATHLETES
FOOT REMEDY - Mix 4 ozs Borax with a gallon of water. Helps get rid of sores on feet as
well. This remedy is for use on feet only.
LIQUID
TERMITE KILLER - Dissolve 2 lbs. of paradichlorbenzine into 1 gal. of water. Spray or
brush on the areas where termites enter.
WINDSHIELD
CLEANER - Mix together 3 parts Glycerine, 1 part Alcohol and 2 parts water. Shake well.
This formula also prevents steam and frost from forming on windshield.
WASHING
POWDER - Mix together thoroughly 15 parts sodium sesquicarbonate with 5 parts trisodium
phosphate. To use, add to the wash water like any other washing powder. Gives excellent
cleaning results.
NAIL
POLISH REMOVER - Mix 6 parts acetone with 4 parts ethyl acetate.
TOILET
BOWL CLEANER - Use straight Potassium Acid Sulphate. Sprinkle in the bowl, allow to
stand for one hour, then clean with brush.
WEED
KILLER - Mix thoroughly 1 lb. of Ferrous Sulphate into 3 gals of water. to use, spray
this solution over weeded areas at sundown.
DRAIN
PIPE CLEANER - Use plain Sodium Hydroxide. Material is toxic, so keep away from skin or
clothing.
COCKROACH
KILLER - Mix together equal parts of Plaster of Paris and Oatmeal. Sprinkle around
areas where cockroaches appear.
To
put this plan into operation it is necessary, of course, to advertise the $1.00 plan.
This can be done by placing the suggested ad in the classified sections of publications
with inexpensive rates - such as mail order ad sheets or publications, magazines, or
neighborhood newspapers. Later, when your budget allows for greater or wider promotion,
you can place ads in the business opportunity and money making sections of magazines with
larger circulation.
It
is also possible to place your offer as a notice on bulletin boards in heavy traffic areas
such as super markets, public halls, etc.
When
orders come in, have a copy of this report reproduced. It will cost just a few pennies
per copy to have it printed. Then mail this report to the people who responded to your ad
and submitted the dollar payment. Your customers, in turn, will receive their moneys'
worth in information value and the opportunity to put this plan to work for
themselves.
Bear
in mind, too, that this plan can be adopted for many other types of offers. Instead of
formulas, you could offer recipes, business information, or thousands of different matters
that people want to learn about. Just change the ad copy to fit your particular
offer.
The
statement "100 letters a day, each containing $1.00" is, of course, rather ambiguous.
There is no scientific method to assure an exact figure for mail order sales or profits.
It depends on many factors, such as the amount of advertising or promotion you put forth,
and the percentage of orders you receive from this effort. $100 per day is surely
possible; it could even be a lot more.
As
mentioned before, this plan is about as "sure fire" as anything devised for sale through
the mail. It requires very little investment and is simple and convenient to operate. It
is probably the easiest, method for an individual to start a mail order business and gain
experience in this field. And, to emphasize an earlier statement, this is an ideal
program to obtain prospects names for other offers.
These
formulas can save you a considerable amount of money for these necessary every day
household products. If you plan to sell any chemical formulas commercially, the
preparations may be subject to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic and Labelling Act. You
can obtain detailed information on such regulations by requesting a free copy of "Digest
of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act", from the Federal Food and Drug Administration,
Washington, DC 20402.
Ingredients
for these formulas may be obtained from drug stores, hardware stores or chemical supply
houses in your area. If the material is not available locally, write to the following

#A-8 MAKE YOUR FORTUNE FROM "FREE" GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS
Very
surprisingly, only a small percentage of the U.S.A. population takes advantage of the
wealth of informative material provided by the world's largest publisher - the U.S.
Government Printing Office.
Here
is a source of priceless, accurate and official information which is reported and written
by experts. Almost every conceivable subject has been reported upon in detail in some
government publication - topics such as energy, employment, health, business, investments,
science and technology, education, careers, transportation, veterans and personal benefits,
consumer advice, foreign trade, law, space, food and diet, astronomy, gardening, medical,
maintenance, housing, money management, equipment, hobbies, travel - the list goes on and
on.
These
publications are available to you upon request. In fact, you indirectly helped pay for
them. A part of your tax contribution is allocated to operate the government printing
office.
Many
of these publications feature business and personal matters that may directly help you
make or save money. This report, however, will outline the most simple and ideal method
to reap a huge financial gain from these publications - selling this information by
mail.
You
undoubtedly have noted ads offering reports on government surplus, oil lotteries, land
acquisitions, energy, etc. These ads appear in many national magazines monthly, year
after year. Such reports contain information extracted from government publications.
Often they are copied word for word. The "insiders" know how and where to get this
valuable information free, or at low cost, then use this material to earn huge profits for
themselves.
Few
people realize that government publications are not copyrighted. Anyone has the authority
to use this material for his own personal benefit. that includes copying it word for word
if desired, reproducing it, and selling the information in the form of books, manuals or
reports.
From
this vast source of published material are many thousands of ideas you can adopt to
prepare an informative publication which can be profitable sold by mail.
The
first step, obviously, is to find out which publications are available, what subjects they
cover and where they can be obtained. The second step is to select topics which would
inform, appeal to and attract a large number of people who would be willing to buy your
information by mail. The third step, of course, is to compile this information into a
book, manual or report, get it printed, then go about the business of marketing it
profitable.
STEP
1. Besides a huge volume of official documents, the government printing office issues
about 25,000 other booklets and reports with topics that concern and interest the general
public. The government also publishes guides which lists and describes new issues when
they become available.
Write
to the consumer Information Center, Pueblo, Co 81009. Request to be placed on their
mailing list to receive the "Consumer Information Catalog" which is issued periodically
during each year. Also, request to receive "Selected U.S. Government Publications" from:
Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC
20402.
Many
public libraries stock these catalogs and some government publications. You can check for
titles of current and back issues and order anything that interest you or copy any
information you need. You may also find copies at other U.S. and state agency offices and
perhaps at your local chamber of commerce office.
Publications
may also be obtained from government offices such as the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S.
Department of Agriculture, etc. These agencies offer many publications pertinent to
matters in their field. For example, the Department of Commerce can provide data and
information assistance in various business matters, foreign trade, etc.
Also
refer to the listings of government agencies and publications in Reports #B-1 and
#B-8.
The
ruling powers in Washington are cutting funds to many agencies. It is likely that in the
future not as many free publications will be available as were provided in the past. The
low cost of any government publication, however, is still a tremendous bargain. Never
hesitate to pay a small amount for valuable information that could be the source of
financial benefits for you.
STEP
2. Which topics to consider for your publication? What type of printed information will the public buy? Basically, to sell successfully by mail, your product must fill a strong NEED or DESIRE. It must offer a specific appeal factor that will make the public want to obtain the product. Some of the strongest appeals are found in products which promise to help people.
| Make Money |
Be Safe & Secure |

|
Thus,
your publication should deal with the "How To" and "Where To" type of subjects. This is
the main information the buying public seeks and will buy. The stronger information
appeal your publication offers, the larger number of people will be attracted to your
offer. This factor will translate into a greater sales volume and ultimately higher
profits.
Emphasized
again, the subject matter of your publication must interest and appeal to an large number
of prospects. Among large group categories are: households, blue collar and white collar
workers, opportunity seekers, investors, dieters, recipe fanciers, gardeners, teenagers,
senior citizens, mail order aspirants, health and exercise enthusiasts, fix-it-uppers,
hobbyist, sportsmen and many other specific classes of people seeking helpful information
to fulfill their desires and needs.
STEP
3. When you decide upon a suitable subject or subjects, your next step is to compile the
information into your own publication. You can copy word-for-word from the government
literature, extract portions of the copy, express the ideas in your own words, or add some
of your own ideas and thoughts to enhance the subject and provide the reader with
additional information.
The
size of your publication will depend upon how many words are necessary to fully cover the
subject. Provide every essential and important detail so the reader will completely
understand and benefit from the information. Don't skimp, but don't include anything that
is superfluous or inappropriate to the subject. Give the customer at least what he
expects - more if possible. A happy, satisfied customer is a confident prospect for your
future offers.
For
example, a publication entitled "Second Income Opportunities", explaining a large number
of money-making activities, might require a booklet form of many pages. A publication
entitled "How to Grow Prize-Winning Roses" might be a report of just a few
pages.
As
stated previously, you can reproduce any government printing, even page for page, if that
size would fit the style of your publication. To test your offer, you can get initial
copies mimeographed, but the best-looking reproduction can be provided by an offset
printer. He can reproduce printed copy. Type your own copy on a machine with carbon
ribbon. It will provide clear, dark copy which the printer can reproduce with sharp
results.
Adopt
a title for your publication that will create attention. The title in a descriptive
circular, or stated in a classified or space ad, can affect sales. The title should
explain the subject matter in as few words as possible. Bring out as many of the appeals
listed in step 2. Yet, keep the title short without sacrificing any word or phrase that
might keep a reader from becoming a customer. Look through magazines for titles of books
and reports sold by mail. You will get ideas for preparing titles to attract the mail
order buyer.
What
price to charge for your publication? Only testing can determine the right price. the
right price is the selling price that brings in the most profit. Not total sales
necessarily, but total profit - the bottom line in any business activity. Set a price
initially based on the suggestions in the following paragraph. Later tests may determine
that you can make more profit by charging more and selling less. Or, test may prove that
by lowering the price and selling more units, you earn more total profits. Often the
introduction of a new mail order product requires testing and testing again- until the
most effective sales copy and the right selling price is established to provide the most
profit from each promotion.
To
make big money selling information by mail, consider pricing your publication at least 10
times its cost. And, that's just the norm for a multi-paged publication. A report of
just a few pages must be sold for 15 to 20 times its cost to realize adequate profits from
promotions. To start, get just a few copies printed. But, don't base your selling price
on this cost. Request the printer quote you on 1,000 and higher quantities. This will be
the volume you will be purchasing if your publication is successful and that cost should
be the basis for initially pricing your publication.
To
promote sales of your publication, use one or all of the usual mail order methods -
classified ads, space ads and direct mail.
Classified
ads are seldom productive if the advertiser solicits orders for items priced over $3.00
directly from the ad. Classified ads are mainly used to obtain inquiries for
higher-priced items. so what can you do with a publication that must sell for $5.00 or
$6.00? You should promote this publication through space ads or include the publication
in a descriptive circular or catalog featuring this publication among other offers of your
own or that of other publishers.
Space
ads are what the term implies; they feature more space than a classified ad. This greater
space allows for bold headlines, more details about the offer and inducements for the
reader to send in an order. If space permits, an order is included in the ad.
Direct
mail consist of sending your offer to a list of names. These names could be your customer
list or names obtained from a list broker. Use only name lists that will be responsive to
your offer. For example, an offer for a gardening publication should not be sent to a
list of auto mechanics. Such a mailing would stand little chance for success. Also, it
would hardly pay to send out a mailing for a $5.00 or $6.00 offer. Use direct mail to
promote /410.00 or higher items, or send circulars or catalogs featuring several
publications to receive orders for multiple items and higher dollar average per
sale.
Selling
information by mail profitably, requires application of the basic methods used by other
successful mail order operators. This report, of course, cannot provide a complete course
in mail order techniques. Refer to Report #A-4 or obtain some books which explain how to
operate a mail order business efficiently.
To
summarize, check over the list of government publications that might provide suitable
material for your own book or report. then send for it. Determine if the contents can be
the basis for a publication with strong appeal to a large group of prospects. Compile
this information into an interesting book or report. Promote your offer slowly and
carefully at the start. If promotional tests are favorable you can increase your
advertising and promotion efforts, sell larger volumes of your publication and earn larger
profits.
Follow
these procedures faithfully and you could be on your way to earning a fortune - making
your start with free government publications.
#A-9 MAKE BIG MONEY WITH EASY HOME-OPERATED ACTIVITIES
If
the economic situation or limited income is causing you financial problems, or if you just
want to earn extra money, there are many simple ways to supplement your income.
This
report provides a wealth of ideas for money making activities conveniently operated from
your home. Most of the services require no investment; a few of the businesses may
necessitate a small cash outlay for starting supplies.
Obviously,
to earn money someone must pay you. People must know about your service or business
before they can patronize it. Thus, you must ADVERTISE what you offer - by personal
contact, by word-of-mouth from friends, neighbors, relatives and customers; by handing out
business cards; by telephone solicitation; by notices on bulletin boards; by distributing
